MPAs slam Nawaz Sharif’s military courts idea in Karachi

Karachi: (Wednesday, January 04, 2012) reacting to Nawaz Sharif’s idea of establishing military courts in Karachi to curb the violence, members provincial assembly Sindh slammed the PML-N chief for his pro-establishment and anti-democracy
thoughts.

Coming up with harshest of the words, an enraged Law Minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro said Nawaz Sharif had a ‘dirty mindset’. Pointing out towards the escalating crime rates in Punjab, the minister asked why PML-N was not establishing
military courts there. When Soomro said what else could be expected from such a leader, certain MPAs shouted “shame, shame”.

PPP’s Humera Alwani alleged that Nawaz had come to Sindh with an agenda of dividing the province. PPP’s Information Minister Shazia Marri said the PML-N leaders thinking had been biased.

As more MPAs wanted to speak on the subject, Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro observed that there could be many ways of lodging a protest, and one of them was moving a censure motion in the House.

PPP’s Dr Sikander Mandhro moved the motion, but a debate on it was deferred until Friday on suggestion of the law minister and MQM’s minister Syed Sardar Ahmed. MQM’s lawmaker Heer Soho wanted to move a motion to debate the gas crisis in Sindh and calling for
invoking Article 158 of the Constitution that stated that the province where natural gas was located had a precedent over other parts of the country for fulfilling its requirements first.

Information Minister Shazia Marri vowed that the requirements of the Constitution over the gas issue would be implemented. Senior Minister Pir Mazharul Haq said there was a unanimity over the issue in the House, and nobody was objecting to the proposed resolution,
but the gas crisis had been taken up at the highest level and he was optimistic that a way out would be found. On the assurances of the law minister, Heer Soho did not press for her motion.

Pointing out towards another grave issue for concern, Senior Minister for Education Pir Mazharul Haq informed the House that a professor of the Sindh University, Basheer Channer, was murdered on the campus because he had stood up against political interferences
there. Pir Mazhar said the government had assured the faculty that the culprits would be brought to justice soon.
