PPP to bring 20th resolution for Seraiki province

In an apparent move to strengthen its position on the political front, the PPP mulls introducing its own draft of 20th constitutional amendment in parliament for formation of Seraiki province in Punjab.

“A separate province for the people of Southern Punjab is a matter of urgent importance and the PPP would use all constitutional means for the creation of new province,” party’s newly appointed vice president, Senator Babar Awan,
said while talking to media.

He observed that draft of the 20th constitutional amendment was being prepared along with the resolution for formation of Seraiki province and both the documents would be tabled in parliament within a few days.

Awan said that consensus would be developed among all the political parties on the issue. “He who opposes the wishes of the people, will be standing alone,” he added.

Awan made it clear that the people would demand for four new provinces in Punjab if the PML-N opposed the 20th constitutional amendment or try to create any hurdle in this regard. “I think Sharif brothers and their party
know the meaning of opposing Seraiki province,” he maintained.

He clarified that provision for formation of new province had already been noted down in the 1973’s Constitution and provincial status to Balochistan was given under this provision.

Awan said that Punjab was the largest province and its seats in the National Assembly are more than total seats of other three provinces. “It has created hatred in the federal units against Punjab,” he held.

Asked about the issues of making Hazara and FATA separated provinces, Awan did not respond. He also skipped the question whether his party would support the MQM’s constitutional amendment or not.

On the other hand reports informed that the party would face sever challenges if it ignored Hazara in the resolution of new provinces. They added that party would lose the support of MQM and JUI if Hazara is being ignored in the
draft.

Commenting about the court of contempt show cause notice, he vowed to go ahead with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s case. The PPP leaders said this in reaction to notices sent to him and other PPP leaders by the Supreme Court for their press
conference in which they used objectionable language against the judiciary.
