Punjab Government comes under criticism for poor law and order

Lahore: (Friday, January 06, 2012) Amid deteriorating law and order situation and increasing crime rates, Punjab government is receiving severe criticism these days.

Good governance is a lot more than mere inventing beautiful slogans and suspending government officials on whims. This is a hard fact glaring Punjab Chief Minister right into the face, and he seems finding no way out except increasing
rates by which he suspends government issues on petty issues instead of listening to them and offering solutions to the pragmatic facts.

Although there have been many crime related issues which are causing criticism to the PML-N, but the one issue which took Punjab Assembly’s attention today was the cold murder of a police Station House Officer (SHO) in Hadyarah,
a rural settlement of Lahore.

With the speaker Rana Iqbal in the chair, the PA session started with a delay of almost one and a half hours. Once again, the PA session witnessed non-serious attitude of legislators, particularly from the PPP opposition members,
a majority of whom did not attend the proceedings as they were to attend a ceremony held in connection with the birth anniversary of the party founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto at the Governor’s House.

For a brief period, the House also witnessed exchange of taunting remarks between law minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan and Opposition leader Raja Riaz during the debate over law and order situation. The remarks were expunged from
the proceedings.

However, this was depiction of the fact that instead of fulfilling their duties, politicians were more interested in point scoring against each other, and this was an attitude observed on part of both opposition and ruling leaders.

The Chief Minister Punjab, Mr. Shahbaz Sharif has been reported with tall claims of rooting out crimes from the entire province, but the fact of the matter is that on average about 33 to 77 per cent increase in crimes has been
reported in one last year. And the responsibility of these increased rates of crimes lie there with PML-N members and politicians of other parties who have been patronizing criminals.
