ANP resolves to second government in hard times

The Awami National Party (ANP), the frontline ally of the government, reposed its confidence on the government, saying it would resist any unconstitutional step by any institution or individual.

“We will continue to support the government and the system and fully oppose any undemocratic and unconstitutional move by anyone,” ANP’s chief Asfandyar Wali said talking to media after the joint sitting of parliamentary party and consultative body at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House.

The ANP’s leader said powers of all institutions were already defined in the Constitution and hopefully no one would cross its limits. “We don’t want the clash of state institutions,” he added.

To a query, Asfandyar observed there will be no clash if all institutions follow the law. He said the ANP will fight if someone goes beyond its limits in ongoing political crisis.

“A democratic set up is vital for stability of the country,” he said, adding Pakistan could not bear any misadventure. He said that there was no point of no-return in politics. “There is always room for negotiations,” he added.

He said that due to the internal and external situation, the country could not afford political instability in the present circumstances and ANP’s top priority was to defuse any possible confrontation among the state institutions.

On the sacking of the Secretary Defence by the Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, the Pakhtun leader said everyone knew that the premier had every right to do so. “The prime minister is the chief executive of the country and he has the powers to do so,” he continued.

On the NRO verdict, Wali said the Supreme Court has given its observations, “Now a larger bench will examine. Wait and see what happens,” he added.

He stressed that there should be no clash between the government and the judiciary. He said process was underway to prepare new transparent voter lists after omitting the fake votes. “How the elections can be held without voter lists?” he asked.

Asfandyar said if the government presents any resolution in the National Assembly for support of the prime minister and the president, his party would decide to favour or oppose it after examining the draft.

He said President Asif Ali Zardari had gone to Dubai for medical treatment to which he had earlier informed.
