Ultimately Election Commission announces Senate polls
Uncertainty and speculations about the Senate polls will have been reduced with announcement of polling dates by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
According to the notification, the polling for 54 seats will be held on March 2. It is worth mentioning here that this is the second round of the polls in the Upper House by the present assemblies.
Half of the members will complete their terms on March 12 while four seats have been reserved for minorities under the 18th amendment of the Constitution. All in all, the PPP will get majority in the Senate polls according to the estimated analysis.
Having strong grip in different provincial assemblies and the National Assembly, the PPP expects to win over 20 seats in Senate. It will be largest bloc in the upper house with more than 40 seats in hands until 2015.
Despite having powerful representation in the Punjab Assembly, the PML-N will not able to cross the digit of 13 in Senate. The PML-Q, the king’s party in the past, will receive severest blow in the upper house, losing 20 out of total 21 members.
According to its representation in the provincial assemblies, it anticipates to win seven seats in Senate.
In quite a deeper shock, the JUI-F will lose seven out of ten seats while it is expected to win only four in the next elections. Its numbers, on which it plays the entire politics with ruling parties, will be decreased down to seven.
The MQM, all-time government’s ally party, whether in province or in centre, will not make any change in the upper house. After losing three members in completion of their terms, three new members will take the positions to maintain the digit of total six.
All anxiety among the political forces is that the PPP will get a larger share in the Senate even if fails to form a government at the federation in the next general elections.
Apart from the differences, it is quite welcoming announcement by the ECP in terms of strengthening democratic setup. Amidst the executive-judiciary rift and civil-military tensions, it is essential to continue the democracy in the country.
All the democratic forces should work together to stabilize the democratic system in the country, rejecting anti-democratic forces at the same time.
