Contraband – An Average Action Flick
Contraband is a 2012 action thriller which is directed by Baltasar Kormakur and produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. It is a remake of 2009 Icelandic film, Reykjavik-Rotterdam which is
written by Arnaldur Indrioason and Oskar Jonasson. Starring in the 110 minutes flick are Mark Whalberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi.
The $25 million budgeted movie centres on a former smuggler, Chris Farraday (Whalberg) who is forced back into doing what he did before after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones),
botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs (Ribsi). Chris heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
Filming took place in New Orleans, Louisiana and Panama City.
The movie received mixed to unfavourable reviews with the review aggregator site, Metacritic, gave it a score of 52 out of 100 based on reviews from 34 critics.
Rotten Tomatoes report that 48 percent of 101 critics gave the film positive reviews, with an average rating of 5.4 out of 10. It states, “It’s more entertaining than your average January
action thriller, but that isn’t enough to excuse Contraband’s lack of originality and unnecessarily convoluted plot.”
Detroit News top film critic, Tom Long, gave it a rating of C+ and declared, “"Contraband" comes off the factory floor with its engine running and ready to drive. But the ride feels overly
familiar.”
Newsday’s Rafer Guzman gave the flick a score of 1.5 out of four and said, “Everyone needs a little action now and then, right? Unfortunately, a little action is all you’ll get.”
IMDB was kinder to the movie as it gave it a score of 6.9 out of 10 from its 1,241 users.
Stephen Cole of the Globe and Mail also praised the movie and gave a better score of 2.5 out of four. He reported, “Though it never quite has us by the lapels, the film is a solid, workmanlike
action flick.”
If you love action thrillers, then Contraband is a good way to pass time.
