Senate forces government to gun down US drones

The government experienced strong criticism from the Senate on a variety of issues on Tuesday where they insisted an immediate implementation of the execution of US drones, which are constantly attacking on Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The Senators wedged their protest against the recent US drone attacks in North Waziristan that killed numerous innocent citizens.

Leader of the opposition, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said, “Don’t make tall claims if you (government) don’t have the courage to stop drone strikes.”

“If the civilian government and military leadership army had no courage to stop drone strikes then they should at least lodge a case against US-led forces in an international court for violating Pakistan’s sovereignty,” he added.

Interior Minister, Rehman Malik also raised his opinion and expressed that recent drone attacks were indeed an assault on the country’s sovereignty.

“The joint session of Parliament will come up with a remedy for drone attacks. We have tried to convince the US that such actions will be counter-productive,” Malik said.

Senator Khurshid Ahmed also condemned the government for not implementing the instructions of Parliament to destroy US drones entering the territory of Pakistan. He demanded an explanation for not implementing the decision about drone attacks, when both
Parliament and the people of Pakistan supported it.

On the other hand, Lawmakers deplored government’s verdict to recover the mark-up of power sector credit from the customers and demanded its instant reversal. They also criticised the government on planning to increase the power tariff in such hard times.

Senator Professor Ibrahim stressed that recovering mark-up from consumers is unjustified and it would force people to go for power theft, if the decision was not taken back.

Furthermore, Senator Raza Rabbani requested the government to occupy Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) as they failed to meet their contractual responsibilities.

The issue was taken to the next level by Senator Tahir Hussain Mashadi, who asked the government to put the names of top KESC persons in the Exit Control list, so they could not think of escaping with the ‘looted money’.

While addressing the power issues, Water and Power Minister Naveed Qamar told senators that no new mark-up will be charged from the consumers and he told that KESC’s licence will be cancelled if their management failed to fulfil their responsibilities.
