Demian Bichir privileged to be nominated alongside Pitt, Clooney
The Mexican Demian Bichir name has been one of the surprises in the nominations for the 84th edition of the Oscars and he is aware that not many know him and probably some of its rivals, like Brad Pitt and George Clooney, will be wondering who he is.
"Sure Brad Pitt is on the terrace of his estate in Italy telling Angelina Jolie ‘Who is this guy?’ George Clooney or by questioning his Italian girlfriend, "joked the actor in a press conference in Mexico City.
On Tuesday morning it was learned that the Mexican, 48, will compete for best actor for his role of an illegal immigrant in the movie "A better life".
The actor is competing with George Clooney, for "The Descendants”, Brad Pitt, "Moneyball," with Gary Oldman for "Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy," and Jean Dujardin for "The Artist".
Although not considered a favorite himself, Bichir said he attend the awards gala in Los Angeles on February 26 to basically have a fun.
"It’s a huge honor to belong to that list of five names which puts me in a position where more people will know me and I have access to more projects and to people that I’ve always wanted to work," said the actor.
Despite his lack of confidence, Bichir recalled cases that actresses like Hilary Swank against all odds won the 1999 award for best actress for the film "Boys Do not Cry."
"The industry is made up of these stories. I think I like it better than someone who was already predetermined," said Mexican actor.
In US weekly the actor also thanked Weitz, “I’m overwhelmed for having my name among those incredible actors. This could have never happened if Chris Weitz had not been the head of this film. He is my brother, and I thank him deeply.”
