Supreme Court directs FIA to arrest PM’s former media adviser

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary informed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director General Tehseen Javed of contempt of court proceedings, if he failed to arrest Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s former media adviser.

PM’s former adviser is purportedly accused of being involved in the fraud case of Rs630 Million.

The Chief Justice said, “Had the FIA arrested the accused, the names of bigwigs would not have emerged before the court.”

Khurram Rasool Butt, former media adviser of PM Gilani was accused of the fraud by the requester, Sameer Hussain, who claimed that Khurram deceived the appellant of Rs630 Million by assuring him a part of LPG and authorization for oil supplies to the Nato
forces residing in Afghanistan.

He told that Butt familiarized him with the PM Gilani to assure him the LPG share. The SC directed FIA on Tuesday to take the statement of Cabinet Secretary Nargis Sethi and take Butt along with his brother into custody.

“Despite clear orders, the FIA DG has not complied with the directives of the court. He is communicated through the additional director general to arrest the accused; in case of failure, he might have to face consequences for non-compliance of the order
repeatedly issued to him,” CJ directed.

The court also took notice of the former FIA DG Waseem Ahmed, who told that Prime Minister’s office had been trying to interrupt the investigation and Butt’s arrest.

On this regard, FIA’s additional DG told that they have followed court orders and Butt will be in custody in the next three to four days.

“If you had arrested the accused, this situation would not have emerged. We are still asking you to arrest Butt for precluding these names from coming up before the court. What the court might decide in the case, though, remains to be seen,” Chief Justice
added.

Nevertheless, the Chief Justice ordered FIA to complete the proceedings and present the report in front of court in the next hearing of the case. He also expressed that it would have been healthier for the case if the FIA had recorded Sethi’s statement in
time.
