Bollywood ready to dominate IPL this season

The Indian filmmakers are not scared of the IPL googly this season, as they believe Indian cricket team has lost their shine and people will not be glued to their television sets this time. This is a reason why Bollywood has lined up a string of releases during the busy cricket season.

Indian Premier League has dominated the Indian film industry for the past four seasons but now things have become a bit different. Indian cricket team has shown extremely poor performance in the test matches. Against England they suffered a 4-0 defeat and there was a similar story against Australia. Therefore, filmmakers have no plans of delaying their movies since they reckon IPL has lost its charm and will not be followed by many this year.

“Team India’s recent shows have triggered a repulsion — audiences are not interested in watching cricket. The release of big-budget movies during IPL this year is a conscious call, beating the trend of the last four years. Close to Rs 350-Rs 400 crore is riding on these movies. Producers have faith that the IPL won’t be to able to steal eyeballs from them,” says trade expert Joginder Tuteja.

Distributor Joginder Mahajan says, “Our team has lost its sheen. There is no fun in watching matches anymore, unlike movies.”

“We have scheduled Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum for April-May and are confident of our film regardless of IPL …,” says Girish Johar, distribution and acquisition head, Balaji Motion Pctures.

Yogesh Raizada of Wave Cinemas also has the same thinking. He told the media people will not be crazy for the IPL and this is just because of Indian cricket team’s poor performance in the test matches.

He said, “Bollywood will dominate this IPL in multiplexes.”

2012 started off on a sour note for Bollywood but with the release of Karan Johar’s ‘Agneepath’ everything is back to the normal now. The movie has proved to be a treat for the audiences as a result to which it has set new records at the Indian box office.

Nevertheless, let’s see if Bollywood really dominates the IPL season, which is to be held from April 4-May 27.
