General elections any time after budget – Gillani

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani has hinted that general elections will be held in Pakistan any time after the budget and said categorically that as a result of the recent events Pakistan is reviewing its foreign policy.

The government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been under immense criticism because of a number of corruption scandals and height of bad governance. On top of that, it has been having confrontation with judiciary as well as the Army of the country. However,
the situation seems to have stabilized somehow and it is now widely predicted that this government will complete its term.

Gillani said that PPP is in dialogue with all the major political forces of the country and is trying to build a consensus on the upcoming general elections. He claimed that PPP does not believe in halting the process of negotiation and communication.

The Prime Minister said, “In politics, no walls are built but bridges are made. We want free, fair and transparent elections.”

In the on-going dark situation of the country, there has been a huge positive that the whole country and the institutions want the democratic process to flourish at any cost. Gillani also feels that there will be no more Martial Laws in the country because
of the massive contributions made by media and the judiciary.

This is quite an extra-ordinary step forward for Pakistan as 28 years out of 64-year-old history of Pakistan have been eaten by the military dictators, which halted the political process in the country.

“I don’t think there will be a coup in Pakistan ever. There is no threat to democracy. We have a vibrant civil society, free media and an independent judiciary,” Gillani feels.

While talking about Pakistan’s relations with the US, Gillani said that now the relations between the two countries will be on equal basis and Pakistan is no more ready to take dictation from any super-power of the world.

He claimed, “In the light of recent events, we are reviewing our relations to build a long-term relationship on the basis of mutual respect, trust and interest. We protected national interests in letter and spirit.”
