Andrew Strauss says players have to play well to retain place in team

Andrew Strauss, England’s skipper, has warned that no player is guaranteed a place in the team unless he performs consistently. He shared these views after a practice session in Dubai ahead of the final Test of the three match series against Pakistan.

"You can’t keep underperforming forever," Strauss said. "All of us have a responsibility to improve our games. I’m a strong believer that no-one is guaranteed their place in the England side. The environment only works if there is pressure on your
for your place, so we all have to work very hard for the next five days."

The Poms were pretty much confident for their competiton against Pakistan, but failed to make an impression on slow and spinning wickets in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Star players Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Ian Bell have been unable to cope up with the conditions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They are averaging below 20 after the first two matches.

On the other hand, the English captain is also struggling to score runs and just averages 17 in the series. He looked good in the second innings of the second Test, but failed to guide his side out of trouble.

Although the tourists have lost the series by 0-2, they are hoping to put up a strong show in the final Test, starting from Friday, February 3, 2012. They will have to work extremely hard, as the opposition seems to be unbeatable at the moment.

Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq is content with the progress of his side and aims to do well in the final Test as well.

The 37-year-old stated, "If you look two years back, you can say it (Pakistan) was an inexperienced side with a lot of young players. Now they have played almost two years, getting experience, getting mature and gelling well in the team. Everybody
knows each other well, understands the game and their responsibilities and what he has to do for the team. That’s the main thing for improvement in Pakistan cricket. As you play together and you keep playing against good sides you improve."
