La Horde – Zombie movie of the week

The French take on the zombie genre in the 2010 film and show everyone how a zombie movie should be done.
Zombies have been a bit of fad over the past few years as many believe that the world will end this year. By many we of course mean a few, yet if there is an apocalypse then we should not worry if there are zombies involved.
A zombie apocalypse is something that everyone today seems almost subconsciously prepared for, with a few special cases more prepared than others.
Yet when you come to Hollywood and movies on the undead things have become a little flat and far too predictable. They all start the same with an outbreak which the audience gets to see firsthand and by the time we get to the struggle and the post-apocalypse
bit things have to be sped up.
La Horde is one exception, in fact, for the first fifteen minutes of the film one would not guess it’s about zombies. However, the movie quickly gets into gear and things never let up from.
The movie follows the story of a police unit who attempt to take down a gang of drug dealers in a condemned building. That is until the entire world goes to Hell and the two parties have to join together in what is a very uneasy alliance in order to survive.
A number of subplots emerge as characters begin questioning each other’s loyalty which adds a nice layer to the blood, guts and gore.
There is an odd joke here or there but overall the tone is extremely serious and the dialogue to the point.
A number of moments in the movie truly stand out and will be remembered as iconic moments in the genre. There is a scene at the very end involving a heavy machine gun, a narrow corridor and hordes of the undead.
At the same time there is another scene where the film’s main protagonist takes on a seemingly endless line of the undead on the roof of a car, in a scene that resembles the game ‘Dead Rising’.
All in all, the movie is a must watch for any and every fan of the zombie genre.
