Contempt of Court case: SC to announce verdict on tomorrow

Islamabad: (Tuesday, April 24, 2012) Hearing the contempt of court petition against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, the Supreme Court has reserved its judgment. It is now to announce the verdict on April 26, 2012.

The seven-member bench hearing the case and headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk, asked Aitzaz Ahsan, PM’s counsel, to make sure the prime minister is present in the court while the judgment is announced.

Earlier, appearing before the court twice, Gilani had decided to fight the case. Throughout the proceedings of the case, he maintained that he had done nothing against the rules of business.

Supporting the stance of his client, Ahsan said that since the bench has taken notice itself, it was not eligible of hearing the case.

After coming out the court, while talking to the journalists, Ahsan said that the attorney general had also agreed with him that according to the current record, there was no contempt of court against his client.

Responding to the question about whether the Prime Minister will make it to court tomorrow, Ahsan said, “I will inform him about it today and he will InshAllah come to the court.”

He further added that the maximum punishment the court could give to his client was six months in prison, but he was hopeful the judges will acquit his client.

Defending Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Attorney General said that presently, there existed no contempt of court law in Pakistan. He was of the view that a section of media was reporting against him because he had sided with
PM’s counsel Aitzaz Ahsan who was trying to bailout Gilani.

Citing Section 8 (2) of the constitution, AG Qadir said that the court could give orders to stop such reporting.

Responding to Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani on whether Qadir thinks that the court was being influenced, the AG said that it was not about getting influenced. Rather it was offending, and thus, he prayed the court to take action
against such reporters.

He was of the view that since he has been made a prosecutor in the case, he will present his arguments independently and without getting influenced from anyone.
