Amir Khan two fights from Floyd Mayweather – Richard Schaefer

The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, who promotes former WBA (Super) and IBF Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan, believes Khan still has bright chances of getting a mega payday against the five-division world champion and the current WBO Welterweight Champion, Floyd Mayweather junior.

The Bolton’s finest, who is more commonly known as King Khan, will lock horns with the current WBA (Super) and IBF light welterweight champion, Lamont Peterson, in their highly-anticipated rematch on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and Schaefer thinks Khan will be only one fight away, if he passes Peterson test.

“Assuming all goes well and he wins against Peterson, he then moves up to welterweight,” Schaefer told the Daily Star. “But I am not so sure if the first fight will be against Floyd, because at that weight it may not be the smartest thing to do.

“In a perfect world, I’d like Amir to have one fight at that weight before fighting Mayweather – but if that fight presents itself we would discuss it. Amir is better than what we saw in most of the last fight with Peterson. His skill level is superior to any fighter with the exception of Mayweather.

Schaefer also reckons that Khan, now 25, is more skilled than the eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, who is the WBC Welterweight Champion.

He said, “He is one of the most talented and skilled fighters but he needs to apply those skills.”

To fight Floyd Mayweather junior has always been Khan’s dream. He had plans to move to up to 147lbs last year but Peterson quashed his dreams. Therefore, he will certainly have to win Peterson this time as otherwise his fight with Mayweather may never happen.

Well, all said and done, even after winning Peterson there would be no guarantee of a fight with Mayweather because his last fight with Peterson was a real turn off for the undefeated American legend, who holds an incredible record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout.

Mayweather, now 35, at that time stated that he doesn’t like Khan’s fighting style, which is an indication that perhaps he wants the Brit to change his style. It looks something not impossible for Khan but let’s see if a fight still gets made between the two.
