Kumar Sangakkara cites poor fielding as cause of defeat to CSK

Deccan Chargers captain Kumar Sangakkara has blamed the fielders for his team’s defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in an important Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Friday.

The Chargers dropped too many catches to let the Super Kings pile up a decent total of 160 while batting first. Faf du Plessis topped the scorecard with his crucial 42 runs.

Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni also played well and respectively added 32 and 34 runs to the total. The Chargers were sloppy in the field, as they put down many crucial catches.

In reply, they were restricted to 150 despite a fabulous start provided by Cameron White and Shikhar Dhawan. White continued his good run with the bat and scored crucial 77 runs. However, his effort proved not to be enough, as the visiting side suffered
a 10-run loss.

Sangakkara stated that his bowlers and batsmen did a decent job, but it was his fielders’ poor effort that allowed the opposition to snatch the victory.

"It is about holding catches, I know mistakes happen but we dropped far too many to win a close game. We batted and bowled well but our fielding has cost us many games this season," Sangakkara said.

"It was a case of getting a good start, we got a good start, but they came back well with some good fielding and we couldn’t get back into the game. White batted exceptionally well. We have some young guys but we have to get the basics rights," he added.

The Super Kings are struggling on their home soil this season. When Dhoni was asked about his team’s not-so-impressive performance at home so far, he opined that it is because of the pitch which has become a bit slower lately.

"The wicket has become slower, difficult for us to capitalise in the latter overs, because of the pitch. It is happening now, it happened last Champions League as well," he said.

On Doug Bollinger’s current status, the CSK skipper shared, "Doug Bollinger is bowling well in the nets, but too many no-balls in the nets, so we need to assess how he goes."
