Ram Gopal Varma, Soojit Sircar not happy with the censor cuts in movies for TV

Milan Luthria’s National Award winning film ‘The Dirty Picture’, which starred Vidya Balan in the lead role, was set for its worldwide TV premiere on Sony TV on a Sunday afternoon last month but the Information & Broadcasting ministry stalled the transmission and instructed the channel to broadcast the film after 11pm so that children don’t see Balan’s portrayal as southern sex siren Silk Smitha.

As per the reports, the original A-rated (Adults Only) film underwent almost 59 cuts but still it was not given a U/A certificate (Parental Guidance) and this news has not gone well with the noted directors of the Bollywood industry.

The director-producer Ram Gopal Varma aka RGV, who is awaiting the release of his film ‘Department’, has commented on the censor board of India.

RGV believes that the concept of censor board is outdated because if they want to keep things away from the children, they should also ban internet and cell phones.

“I am not aware of the regulations…how they (Censor board) manage it. The concept of censorship is outdated in today’s times as every person has access to various things.”

“You just have to offer the content and it is upto them whether they want to see it or not. The whole thing about protecting it from children …how anything can be protected from anyone, in that case even cellphones and internet must also be banned,” Varma told PTI.

Meanwhile, Soojit Sircar, whose recent movie ‘Vicky Donor’ dealt with a subject of sperm donation, also shared his thoughts with the media.

Sircar said, “I think it is people’s decision what they want to see and what not. It is not only the responsibility of filmmakers, but also of parents to see what it is right or wrong for their children. Like sometimes, even item numbers are vulgar.”

“We were granted U/A certificate by Censor Board. In our film we are addressing a social problem so there is nothing wrong about it,” he added.
