Hours after getting a clean chit from National Assembly Speaker in regard to his conviction by the Supreme Court, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani termed her verdict a victory of the democracy.

Speaking to a gathering of educators, the premier also recited a verse of Ghalib: “Bay khudi bay sabab nahin Ghalib; Kutch tau hai jiss ki parda dari hai”.

In his view, Pakistan’s destiny would have been quite different had the judiciary listened to first Speaker Maulvi Tameezuddin when he knocked its door against suspension of the Assembly.

The premier assured that the federal government would continue to initiate measures for promotion of education in the country despite devolution of health and education to the federating units.

Announcing Prime Minister House to convert into an institution of learning, Gilani said the incumbent was committed to promote not just basic education but also higher education.

Expressing his desire to make the capital a role model in terms of facilities for teachers and standard of education, he said they could enhance image and identity of the country by presenting Islamabad as a role model.

Accepting  the demands of the educators, the premier announced launching of Cooperative Housing Society for Education, and setting up of Community Centre and Education Club.

Earlier, the prime minister held a meeting with a delegation of Supreme Court Bar Association. He said progress of the country was possible only with the strengthening of democracy and national sovereignty.

Stressing that there should not be any overlapping of institutions, he said the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) was a national party working for the strengthening of democracy and rule of law in the country.

Gilani said Benazir Bhutto had preferred to remain in prison during the movement for the reinstatement of judiciary instead of compromising on her principles.

He said he didn’t give up hen a lawsuit was filed against him under Terrorism Act after Benazir Bhutto handed the leadership of PPP to him, when she went into jail.

In the concluding remarks, he asked President PML-N, Nawaz Sharif, to learn from the past instead of criticizing the government.
