Shah Rukh Khan: Government’s lavish celebration over KKR’s IPL victory was not wrong

Last Sunday night, Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Chennai Super Kings in the final to lift their first ever IPL trophy and the Chief Minister of the state, Mamata Banerjee along with the Governor M K Narayanan spent lavishly on the champions.

The players were given 10 gram gold lockets and many other gifts, a move which was ridiculated by a lot out there since they think to spent so much on a club team is not fair.

However, SRK, the co-owner of KKR and also the state’s brand ambassador, believes there was nothing wrong in the grand felicitation, which was organised by the state government for IPL-5 winning team.

On Tuesday, Shah Rukh Khan stood by Mamata Banerjee and said there is nothing wrong if the players have been given some importance.

“There is no harm in being happy and sharing happiness. Nobody should criticise it. It’s alright to be happy.

“Let’s not be political. It has been done because we all are happy. There is nothing wrong if we bring a bit of happiness to the city of joy,” he said.

The 46-year-old, who locked many headlines in the country a week ago for misbehaving with a guard at the Wankhede Stadium, insisted that KKR had waited long for this moment and now when they have finally lifted the trophy, everyone should celebrate with them.

“It is a humble moment, I must say. For the last four seasons, all the KKR players and our families were moving with a desire to win the cup.

“We had all come from different states – some had come from Mumbai, Gujarat, Delhi – and made this city our home. So we wanted to win the hearts of the Kolkatans. Today, I felt that I had won the heart of Kolkata,” the actor said.
