Tannishtha Chatterjee believes Bollywood is embracing trash of the West

The Indian actress, Tannishtha Chatterjee, who is best known for her performance in the British film ‘Black Lane’ (2007), has always stayed away from the typical Bollywood potboilers, skin show and the glamorous look since she believes that the Hindi film industry is not adopting the right things from the western cinema.

These days most of the Indian films are being made on sexuality. Actresses like Poonam Pandey, Sunny Leone, Veena Malik, Rakhi Sawant, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu, Paoli Dam and Vidya Balan are on every director’s wish-list because they have recently dared to bare in their movies.

However, Chatterjee feels exposing skin should not be the key to success.

Tannishtha told IANS, “I have nothing against pornography. Personally, I don’t think I want to be a porn star.”

“But anywhere in a literate world in a cultured society, that is an alternative culture existing. Unfortunately, we are embracing the trash of the west and that’s very sad.”

“I am not saying that pornography does not need to exist. It has its own space, but I think you should make serious stuff for the mainstream,” she added.

In the meantime, the actress revealed that she feels happy at times because now audiences have started liking alternative cinemas as well. Chatterjee mentioned movies like ‘Vicky Donor’ and ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ which did an excellent business at the Indian box office without big promotions.

“I am very happy here. I think more interesting stuff is happening in this space and in the last two years, we need to question what is commercial because a lot of what we call ‘other kind of cinema’ is embraced and appreciated by our younger audiences,” Tannishtha said.

Well, all said and done, Chatterjee has certainly got some guts because she also raised her voice against the Indian Medical Association (IMA) who wanted an apology from Aamir Khan for accusing them of malpractices in his TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’.
