Legendary Pakistani singer, Mehdi Hassan, who was often referred to as the King of Ghazal, is not among us anymore as he passed away at the Agha Khan hospital in Karachi today.

Mr Hassan was battling from lung, chest and urinary tract ailments for the past twelve years but today he finally lost his battle and left the music lovers all over the world in sorrow.

Mehdi Hassan, who had a huge fan following in the world, was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Agha Khan Hospital for the last one week but his fans were hoping for good since this time he was not on the ventilator.

Though Mr Hassan was ill for the last many years his son told the media that his condition had deteriorated severely over the last month.

“My father has been ill for the last 12 years but this year his condition has deteriorated significantly and in the last one month he was released from hospital for just one day before being admitted again,” Arif had told PTI a few days back.

While talking to the media today, his son revealed that Mr Hassan’s condition got upset last night and in the morning he expired.

In the meantime, Arif appreciated all the help from the doctor, especially Dr. Sonawala, who he said looked after his father in the past twelve years.

Mehdi Hassan was born in 1927 in a village called Luna in Rajasthan, India and he migrated to Pakistan at the age of 20. He started his singing career in 1957 and soon became a well known name in the world.

Mehdi Hassan has given some evergreen ghazals to the music industry. Some of his famous songs include ‘Zindagi mein tu sab he pyar kiya karatay hain’, ‘Ab k hm bicharay’, ‘Gulon main rang’, Pyar bharay do sharmilain nain’, ‘Main hosh main tha tu’ and many more.

Due to his mesmerizing performances, the undisputed Ghazal king was honoured with ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz’, ‘Pride of Performance’ and ‘Hilal-e-Imtiaz’ by the Government of Pakistan and he was presented with ‘Gorkha Dakshina Bahu’ award by the Government of Nepal.

Well, all said and done, a legend like Mehdi Hassan is certainly a great loss to the music world and the void created by his absence will never be filled.
