The legendary ghazal singer of Pakistan Mehdi Hassan passed away at the Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi last Wednesday and the news of his death has left almost everyone upset in the world of music and among many one is Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Amitabh Bachchan, who is one of the most respected actors in the Hindi cinema, expressed his feelings on his Twitter page.

The actor stated he has gone deeply upset with upon hearing the news of Hassan’s death because a singer like him comes once in a while.

“Deeply pained to learn of the passing away of Mehdi Hassan, in Pakistan… a vocalist of immense fame and unique sonorous voice.

Bachchan thinks with Hassan’s death the era of soulful ghazals have also ended.

“Mehdi Hassan, an entire era of soulful ghazal singing, gone… now left with beautiful memories and personal meetings with him…,” Bachchan posted on Twitter.

Mehdi Hassan was born in 1927 into a family of traditional musicians in a village called Luna in Rajasthan, India. He migrated to Pakistan at the age of 20 and started his 55-year long singing career in 1957.

However, while recalling his meeting with Hassan, Amitabh wrote, “Mehdi Hassan once told me, he came from humble beginnings and used to train and sing to the tone of the tractor sound in the fields.”

Along with Amitabh Bachchan, the melody queen of India Lata Mangeshkar is also very upset on the death of Ghazal maestro.

Lata, who once called Mr Hassan as the ‘Voice of God’, said she has no words to explain her feelings.

Two years ago a duet between Lata and Hassan ‘Tera milna’ was released. It was Lata and Hassan’s first and last duet together and the song was composed by Hassan himself written himself. Nevertheless, due to his illness he could hear the track when it was sent to him later on and Lata feels very saddened about it.

“When our one and only duet was launched, we sent him tapes of that. He was critically ill and could not understand the song. It was very unfortunate,” Lata told PTI.
