Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia: An analysis of their strengths and weaknesses

Monday, July 2nd, 2012 4:57:18 by

Former IBF and WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan will take on WBC light welterweight Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Just two weeks away from the fight, both fighters are working hard in their gyms to pump up those fibres that will make them sturdier and stronger in the ring.

Khan has already reported earlier that he is mainly focusing on increasing his strength and endurance, whereas Garcia is undergoing his usual training routines, as he believes Khan is just another fighter. Not much is known of Garcia’s training regime, since the champion tends to keep things under the hood, while Khan likes sharing updates with his fans.

Khan is being trained by Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach and is being conditioned by Ruben Tabares. On the other hand, Garcia is being trained by his father Angel Garcia. Of course, Khan has an edge over Garcia when it comes to the professionals they work with. Khan has a solid band of probably the most renowned players in the industry, while Garcia just has his father. No emotional stuff here, Garcia needs to move on and get along with better trainers and strength conditioners.

Freddie Roach has trained some of the best fighters in the world, including Manny Pacquiao the former WBO welterweight titlist. However, Danny is probably proud of training with his father, especially when his father his confident and proud of him.

In a recent interview, Angel Garcia, trainer and father of Danny Garcia stated, “First of all, Khan is an overrated fighter. There’s a lot of fighters out there who are rated and we are going to execute every single one of them. We’re coming out here to fight the best. Second of all, Peterson whooped him like an octopus, hit him from all kind of angles – and then he [Khan] blamed it on the judges.”

Khan’s strength is his speed but for now, he wants to build up his strength. Garcia’s plus point is his strength and his inside game, which definitely is a weapon against Khan. If Khan is unable to keep Garcia out, he will have a ring upset for sure.
