In what appeared to be a sigh of relief for the masses, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed medics affiliated with the Young Doctors Association (YDA) to end their strike and resume duties in all sections of the hospitals across the province.

It ruled out that while hearing the case involving petitions for cancellation of young doctors’ licenses for allegedly committing professional misconduct and against the two-week long strike.

In the meanwhile, the court asked the provincial government to give service structure to doctors likewise police and armed services.

Counsel for doctors, Raja Zulqarnain, informed the court that the provincial government was harassing the medics despite the clear directives from the court. Moreover, he said that the medics had been issued illegal notices by the Punjab government.

The provincial government in its reply submitted to the court said, “The doctors are issued notices under the Punjab Employees, Efficiency and Discipline Act of 2006 (PEDA Act)”.

Upon which the court said that the medics should inform the court if they were being harassed. According to the verdict, the court will itself take measures to ensure that the doctors get due respect and honor.

About the issues of suspension, dismissal and other notices, the court directed both the provincial government and representatives of YDA to sit together and resolve the issues showing goodwill. It was of the opinion that both the parties would be given enough time to settle down the issues.

The court remarked, “No individual or institution would be permitted to act in violation of the law and the Constitution”.

Calling to doctors the court said, “Nobody disagreed with your views. You are the cream of Pakistani society and you deserve to have a service structure on the pattern of the army, judiciary and bureaucracy”.

The court also formed a committee to settle-down the issues between the doctors and the provincial government, which is expected to present its report after a period of two weeks.

Consider the sufferings of the masses, the court ordered the medics associated with the YDA to resume working in the emergencies, OPDs and all other hospital wards by 9 am Monday.
