NA 151 By-elections: Gilani replaces with Gilani

Although Gilani has been replaced with another Gilani, by-election in a particular constituency doesn’t serve an index of how things will play out in general polls. Much of the body entropy is required for that to happen in the future.

Off course the politics of every area is quite dissimilar and contours of each constituency still vary in their own way.

The constituency of Abdul Qadir Gilani, NA 151, the seat fell vacant after the Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified former premier Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court case, was an open opportunity for the media to let go of.

Some analysts believe that the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has lost its mandate in the masses. The nail-biting competition between Shaukat Hayat Bosan and Abdul Qadir Gilani in which the latter won by a lead of four thousands was latest instance of losing popularity.

The political pundits, who want to see Gilani losing the seat, changed their stances saying the PPP candidate managed to win the elections by such a short margin.

Although Abdul Qadir Gilani received fewer votes as compared to his father, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in 2008 general elections, the comparison was not apple-to-apple.

Different political parties fielded different candidates in the previous elections where the recent elections between PPP and rest of all. Bosan got the support of all opposition parties including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).

At the same time, the losing candidates accepted, which happened rarely in the political history of the country, there had been no rigging in the polls. Some circles from the PTI have taken stance otherwise.

The by-polls in NA 151 also provided a powerful response to the perturbing speculation about interim government and extra-constitutional moves. The highly competitive race in the by-polls has shown that the electorate isn’t so easy to influence and is ready to be wooed by other possible legislature.

A respect for the will of the people, whether it is due to propagandas or unawareness, is vital for the polity to get anywhere.  As mention above, by-election elections don’t mean anything more than what they do.

However, whatever it is worth, the people of Multan have spoken and opponents had better learn to grin and bear it until the next general elections.
