Reading: the essence of intellect

Human intellect and wisdom has always been considered as the byproduct of exposure to the world, for which, reading is perhaps the best source. Generally perceived to be a religion of logic and rationality, Islam terms it obligatory for its followers to
equip themselves with all type of education.

In Quran’s revelation, the very first word directs the Muslims, and the rest of the humanity to ‘read’. For reading is the essence of the human intellect and rationality. While fully comprehending the importance of reading the modern day world has started
to devote its time for reading, most the people usually find it difficult as to what to read.

Certainly, for everything that comes before someone is neither worth reading, nor is it relevant to every person, in such situation, one finds is rather difficult to make the right choice in selecting the reading material. In a philosopher’s words, education
has taught the humans to read, but has yet to teach them as what to read.

Faced with such a situation, the students usually seek for expert advice. The only words that can be offered to them in this regards are that they should first prioritize on what they want to achieve or become. Once, this choice is made, selection of the
reading material becomes quite easy.

This is worth noting here that in order to excel in one’s prioritized filed of interest it is a must to stay updated in it. This will not only add to one’s competence, but will also help the one in finding and embarking upon new research areas.
