Court sends LeJ leader Malik Ishaq on 14-day judicial remand

A local court on Friday sent the leader of banned outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Malik Ishaq, to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

He, who is nominated in 44 cases in which 70 people were killed, sent to Kot Lakhpat jail.

Earlier on Thursday, Model Town Investigations Police had arrested Ishaq from him the Allama Iqbal International Airport on his return from Saudi Arabia after performing Umrah.

SP Investigations Model Town Division, Ijaz Shafi Dogar while speaking to the media said that a case no 917/12 was registered against Malik Ishaq in the Nishtar Colony Police Station on August 9, 2012 under Section 295-A and 3-Amplifier Act.

The case was registered against Malik Ishaq as he was delivering a fiery speech in a mosque situated in the Nishtar Colony against Shia community, he added.

The case was registered against him but the accused went to Saudi Arabia for performing Umrah.

On his return, the Model Town Police accompanied by Cantonment Operation police took him into custody and shifted him to the South Police Station amid tight security.

Malik Ishaq is involved in more than 40 cases in which 70 people had been killed with majority of the deceased belonging to the Shia community.

The leader of LeJ was released from the Kot Lakhpat jail on July 14, 2011 years when the apex court granted him bail in the Sri Lankan cricket team terrorist attack case.

He then detained in Rahim Yar Khan Jail for 10 days under the Maintenance of Public Order Act but later the detention was extended for 60 days on October 25.

He remained in prison for nearly 14 years over his alleged involvement in numerous incidents of sectarian violence.

He gave many sermons against Shia community since his release from prison, raising sectarian tensions in the country.

The LeT, which is considered fiercest Sunni extremist group, was banned more than a decade ago by former president Gen Pervez Musharraf.

It is accused of killing hundreds of minority Shia Muslims after its emergence in the early 1990s.
