Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam took out Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after getting the better of Australia’s Perth Standlick in the final that went down at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Saturday, September.

The battle turned out to be extremely intense, exchanging blows until the very end, though once the dust settled, it was Boukhiam who stood victorious while his rival was forced to settle for runner-up place.

The Moroccan surfer had been in prime form for the past week, putting on one exquisite performance after another in demanding conditions to pass through the rounds. The waves were not easy to handle, but Boukhiam did exceptionally well to adapt to them and post big scores on the scoreboard.

In the battle for the overall victory, he found himself pitted against Standlick. The Australian was in as good a form as his rival, proving his mettle against some of the most promising talent from around the globe.

As the final got underway, both Boukhiam and Standlick had their work cut out as the conditions becoming increasingly difficult. The demanding one-to-two foot waves were bound to put the skills, experience and perseverance of the two surfers to test.

As the battle got underway, both the surfers got off to a slow start, taking their time to adjust to the conditions on hand. The Australian surfer eventually managed to grab a couple of decent waves to reach a heat-total of 11.83 points.

However, Boukhiam managed to get past his rival on the score-board after making his way to a two-wave total of 12.90 points, which held up until the end to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.

“I’m super happy,” stated Boukhiam in his post-final interview. “With my European Junior title I was already over the moon, and I entered this event simply cause it’s close to home. Being one of my first big Star event, to win here today is unreal, I’ve been consistent this whole event but I haven’t had massive scores like others have so I’m so stoked! I want to thank my entourage Yannick and Patrick Beven, Micky Picon, my mom, brother and all my mates including Dimitri with whom I train all the time and I have a special thought for my dad today too.”

The ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz is the first major win for the Moroccan and will definitely give some a heavy boost of confidence, something that is crucial to earn more success in the future.
