Australia’s Perth Standlick and Portugal’s Francisco Alves successfully secured their spot in the third round (Round of 64) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that took place at the main site of Playa de Pantin in Galicia, Spain, on Wednesday, September 12.

While Standlick grabbed the win in the third heat, Venezuela’s Jean Schaffer managed to clinch runner-up place, thus accompanying the latter into the next round. Brazil’s Marco Fernandez and Spain’s Pablo Monteiro were removed from the race for the event title after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.

The fourth heat saw Basque Country’s Normal Landa accompany the heat-winner Alves into the next round after finishing in second place. Spain’s Daniel Aznar Gonzale and Basque Country’s Ethan Egiguren rounded out the bottom-two positions, thus finding themselves making an early exit from the competition.

Standlick continued to display a solid form in the two-o-three foot waves on offer at the event site on the opening day of the competition. The 22-year-old Australian took out his competitors in the third heat after earning an 8.00 and 5.67 off his best-two waves to eventually finishing with a heat-total of 13.67 points.

“Even though I just won, I still feel I had a shocker,” Standlick stated. “I was struggling at the beginning of the heat to find a decent wave, and then I went to my plan B and it ended up being better. Plan B was to sit and wait for the lefts, not even go near anyone on the rights and just do my own thing. It’s a pretty fun left but it’s a little bit fat, so you got to really pick the right one that’s going to stand up.”

Schaffer made it into the next round as well after finishing with a heat-total of 11.60 points, which proved sufficient to earn him runner-up place.

Fernandez and Monteiro got eliminated from the event after finishing with a heat-total of 10.16 and 4.47 points respectively.

The fourth heat saw Alves walk away with the win after scoring a 5.00 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with an additional 4.23-point ride, reaching a decisive heat-total of 9.23 points as a result.

Landa qualified for the next round as well after registering a couple of scores in the three-point range to eventually finish with a two-wave total of 6.94 points.

Gonzale finished third after scoring a heat-total of 6.77 points, while Egiguren had to settle for fourth place after failing to do any better than a heat-total of 5.04 points.
