Pakistan has made tremendous sacrifices for peace: Prime Minister Ashraf

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Monday said Pakistan in pursuit of peace and prosperity has made tremendous sacrifices which had to be acknowledged by and large.

 

Addressing 9th Summit of the Asia-Europe in Vientiane Laos ‚ the Pakistani premier said the region’s enormous potential would remain under utilization if an atmosphere of conflict and tension continues to prevail.

 

He stated that the security situation in the region was the out of three decades old conflict in Afghanistan has not allowed our people the degree of prosperity they deserved.

 

He noted, “It is important that the regional countries avoid conflicts and resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiations.  We should be able to preserve peace as well as the progress we have achieved.|

 

PM Ashraf said both Asia and Europe need to focus on the issues of energy security‚ food security‚ disaster management‚ water resource management and counter terrorism. All religions and faiths and followers need the respect they deserve, he added.

 

In his view, it is most unfortunate that the misuse of the freedom of expression by some individuals who tried to trespass the threshold of decency and created misunderstanding, adding that such elements should not be allowed to succeed in their nefarious designs.

 

The ninth Summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting‚ (ASEM) was begun at Vientiane in Laos in which forty six heads of state and representatives are attending the moot.

 

The basic objective of the meeting is to promote cooperation for peace‚ stability‚ development and prosperity.
Summit is a very important event that would have a positive impact on Pakistan’s economic and commercial ties with other member states.

 

ASEM-9 under the theme: “Friends for Peace‚ Partners for Prosperity” is an international forum centered on the issues of Euro-Asian dialogue in the field of security‚ economy‚ education ‚culture‚ environment‚ added that Pakistan also a participant to it.

 

It will provide yet another important occasion for leaders of Asia and Europe to discuss regional‚ international issues of common interest and concern including among others‚ food and energy security‚ sustainable development‚ financial and economic crisis‚ climate change‚ natural disaster response‚ socio-cultural cooperation and future direction of ASEM.
