Petition filed in Supreme Court against Tahirul Qadri’s long march

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court asking it to stop Minhajul Quran Interntaional (MQI) chief Tahirul Qadri’s million-man march scheduled for January 14.

The petitioner, Advocate Asad Mahmood, maintained that if Qadri has any reservations regarding the current democratic system, then he should take up constitutional methods to protest against it. He added that the MQI chief had a lot of followers to support him.

Earlier, a petition was filed in the Lahore registry of the Supreme Court, asking the court to stop Qadri and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain from political activities in Pakistan because they are both foreign nationals and unable to become members of parliament.

The petition had said that Qadri was threatening to bring down a democratic set up and by doing so, he was violating Articles 6, 8, 9, 62, 17, and 67 of the constitution.

The petition also stated that Qadri has committed treason by “inciting” the army and “inviting” the judiciary to be part of the caretaker set up.

It is vital to mention here that Tahirul Qadri, who returned from Canada after spending five years there, had announced to lead a long march to Islamabad on January 14 if the current government fails to fix the system. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) decided to join the long march despite being a part of the current setup.
