Waqar Younis wants international cricket back in Pakistan

Pakistan’s former captain and a legendary fast bowler, Waqar Younis is disappointed that no international cricket is being played in the country and feels that the country will struggle to remain a competitive team at the global level in the prevailing circumstances.

Since the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March, 2009, Pakistan has not hosted a single international cricket match. The Green Shirts have played all their games away from home since then and have adopted United Arab Emirates as their second home.

While speaking to Sports 360, Waqar, who is considered to be among the greatest fast bowlers of all times, expressed his disappointment and feels that the people of Pakistan have been deprived to witness international cricket, which is a tragedy.

If the situation does not change in future, the former skipper believes that the Green Shirts will not remain a force to reckon with at the highest level of the sport.

He said, “It’s almost five years since we have had international cricket in Pakistan. It is disheartening not only for the young cricketers but also the general public. They are not getting to watch top-class cricket. If the situation continues, I feel cricket will struggle to sustain itself in Pakistan.”

While commenting on Pakistan’s performance in the first Test of the three-match series against South Africa at Johannesburg, Waqar mentioned that the Proteas are always hard to beat at home, especially because of the hard and bouncy pitches.

“South Africa is always a tough place to tour. Pakistan have never won a Test series there and it is very tough for young batsmen, who are brought up on the slow subcontinent wickets, to adjust to the pace and bounce,” Waqar expressed.

The legendary cricketer however, is extremely impressed by the growth of Junaid Khan in recent times and hopes that the left-armer can serve the country for a long time to come.

“For Pakistan, Junaid Khan has emerged as a very good bowler and he has done very well,” he added.
