PPP faces setback as Balochistan Raisani joins PML-N

Pakistan Peoples Party on Tuesday faced another political setback as senior leader from Balochistan, Nawabzada Lashkari Raisani formally joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).

Raisani announced his decision during a meeting with PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif. Both leaders later appeared at a joint press conference.

A 22-member delegation of political leaders from Balochistan met the PML-N chief in Raiwind and announced their decision to join the party.

Raisani told reporters that he is still committed to Benazir Bhutto’s vision for democracy and has the similar opinion about Nawaz Sharif’s approach. He recalled Beanzir-Nawaz signing of the Charter of Democracy in 2006.

“Unfortunately, the PPP-led government failed to honour Benazir’s ideals after coming into power,” he added.

To a question about the performance of his brother for failing to improve the situation in Balochistan, Raisani stressed that the province is suffering because of dictatorial policies spanning over many decades and nothing can be changed overnight.

Speaking to the media, Nawaz welcomed the new members to his party and lashed out at the PPP government.

He said that the PPP government has pushed Pakistan 50 years back, adding that he will try his best to take steps to recover the economy. He said PML-N will try to make a strong government instead of a weak govt.

Four Balochistan MPAs also joined the PML-N.

PPP President from District Kohistan Haji Misr Khan and PPP MNA from the same area Saeed Ahmad Khan also announced that they have decided to join the PML-N.

Raisani had resigned from PPP in 2012 after he developed differences with the party. He developed considerable clout in the province as the brother of the former chief minister Nawab Aslam Raisani and in his own right as a PPP leader there.
