Daren Liew outshines Scott Evans in Men’s Singles event of 2013 Axiata Cup

Malaysia’s talented shuttler Daren Liew continued his successful journey in Axiata Cup and overwhelmed Scott Evans in a short lived group match on Sunday, March 24, 2013.

This Men’s Singles encounter was a part of the match between Malaysia and Ireland. Both contenders remained head-to-head for 23 minutes but Daren Liew locked the honour with a favourable result of 22-20 and 21-19.

The local badminton arena of Surabaya, Indonesia was filled to its brims as a huge crowd assembled to support both shuttlers.

The battle heated up when the Malaysian campaigner unleashed a series of productive strokes and piled up a decent total in no time. He capitalised this advantage and strengthened his grip before the one-minute break.

After the mid-game break, he lost focus for a short span of time and allowed his competitor to proceed on the points table.

The Irish player did not squander this opportunity and tipped the scale in his favour. Scott Evans bagged many valuable points in a row and caught his rival in third quarter of the set.

Both contenders stood toe-to-toe until the game point situation and this nerve-racking tussle ended when Daren registered a decisive margin of 22-20.

The second set of match was also played in similar manner as both male shuttlers challenged each other in all areas of the game and made this tie a memorable contest.

Initially, the Malaysian player relished full benefits of his first set win and kept his challenger at the lower end.

However, Scott displayed a great fighting spirit and bounced back into the contest with a strong reply. He clinched many points without any interruption and finished first half of the set with a respectable score.

After the interval, Daren showed superior finishing skills and swept the table with 21-19 total.
