Major League Baseball Update/ News

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander has declined any comments on his contract talks with the management. It is also important to mention that the reported deadline to discuss extension was already expired.

“I’ve got no comments on my contract,” he said. “I’m one start away from Opening Day and I’d prefer to talk about that.”

Later Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told CBS Sports, “First of all, Justin is still with us two more years, And as I’ve said, we want Justin to remain a Tiger for a long time.”

Justin Verlander and Tigers management want a potential extension in the contract but somehow still many things are needed to be clear before any potential signing.

Verlander told Yahoo! Sports in late February.” Of course, I don’t play this game to make the most money. But I do feel like it would be nice to be compensated for what I feel like I’ve been: one of the best, if not the best, the last few years. In my career, I feel like I’ve been one of the top.”

He added, “But the last two years, I’ve kind of separated myself, me and a handful of other guys. It’s not a thing where I’m like, ‘Hey, I want to be the highest-paid player,’ where that’s the chief goal. It innately comes with my competitiveness. That’s just me. That’s not why I play the game. I’m good at the game because of that side of me, because I’m competitive at everything I do.”

It is a very healthy sign that Tigers want Verlander for next few more seasons. As everyone in Major League knows that Verlander is one of the key players in the Tigers roster and for last two seasons, he has been playing with quite consistency.

Last season, Verlander went consistent with 2.64 ERA along with 17-8 win loss, 239 strikeouts and 1.06 WHIP. Not only just in the last MLB outing, but Verlander has good career record of 3.40 ERA along with 124-65 win loss, 1454 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP.
