Musharraf’s bail in Benazir murder case extended

The Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench on Wednesday extended by a week interim bail to former President Pervez Musharraf in the case of the 2007 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto, lawyers said.

Musharraf has been accused of failing to provide adequate security to Benazir Bhutto when she returned to Pakistan from exile in 2007.

She was killed in a suicide bombing and firing in Rawalpindi shortly after she addressed a big public meeting.

The former President has denied any involvement and says that the case has been for political motives.

Musharraf personally appeared before the bench of Lahore High Court in Rawalpindi under tight security where a group of lawyers chanted slogans against him.  His supporters also raised slogans in his favour.

An anti-Terrorism Court had previously declared Musharraf a “proclaimed offender” and issued an arrest warrant for him after he failed to cooperate with investigators probing the assassination.

The court had also indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011 after the investigators had requested the court to summon him as to why he had failed to provide enough security to Benazir Bhutto.

He got interim bail after he returned Pakistan last month after over a four-year self-exile.

Musharraf returned to the country last month after nearly four years in self-exile to lead his All Pakistan Muslim League party in the May 11 general election.

Election authorities have disqualified him to stand for elections and his lawyers say he has filed appeals against the decision.
