5.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Pakistan

A 5.7 earthquake on the Richter scale jolted most parts on northwestern and central parts of Pakistan Wednesday afternoon, the meteorological department said.

 

There was no report of casualty or destruction. However, the tremours created panic and people in some areas run out of buildings.

 

Quake jolted Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Dir, Nowshera, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Kasur and other areas. The earthquake was also felt in India and Afghanistan.

 

According to Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the quake was in south of Afghanistan.

 

Local media had earlier reported the intensity as 6.2 on the Richter scale.

 

The U.S. Geological Survey also said that an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan at 09:25: 30 GMT on Wednesday.

 

The epicenter, with a depth of 65.10 km, was initially determined to be at 34.5696 degrees north latitude and 70.2278 degrees east longitude.

 

The epicenter of tremors was in southeastern region of Afghanistan 71 kilometers underneath.

 

There is no report of loss of life or property so far.

 

Reports from Afghanistan suggest that an earthquake has jolted areas in Afghanistan. The earthquake shook a number of areas in Afghanistan, including Kabul, capital of Afghanistan.

 

An earthquake of 7.9-magnitude had hit the country had killed dozens of people and injured many more in Balochistan province last week.

 

Mashkel area of Washuk district in Balochistan was badly affected by the tremours.
