The Council of Common Interests at its meeting in Islamabad Wednesday approved the new National Energy Policy.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The energy policy focuses on exploitation of cheap sources of energy including coal‚ hydel‚ solar and wind to overcome the electricity shortage.

The policy envisages production of seven thousand megawatt electricity through coal.

The prime minister congratulated the members of the council for unanimous approval of the energy policy.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif‚ Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhawa Pervez Khattak‚ Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik and other members of the council attended the meeting.

The Minister of Water and Power, Khwaja Asif, will unveil the policy at a press conference in Islamabad.

The policy approval was deferred earlier this month for further consultations with the provinces. The draft had been shared with the provinces for their input.
