An armed man Thursday succeeded to enter the Islamabad’s sensitive area and raised questions about the capability of the police and other law enforcement agencies to disarm the man.

The man, identified as Sikandar and belonged to Hafiz Abad in Punjab, carrying a Kalashnikov and a sub-machine gun‚ in a car resorted to aerial firing on the Jinnah Avenue near Red Zone in Islamabad at about 5:30 p.m.

A woman‚ reportedly his wife‚ and two children are also accompanying him.

Police has cordoned the area and SSP Operations Islamabad Police Dr. Rizwan is negotiating with the gunman and his wife.

However‚ he is not willing to surrender his arms or hand himself over to Police.

Police say they are exercising restraint and trying to tackle the situation with utmost care as the gunman is apparently using the woman and two children as shield against any possible action.

A large number of people have gathered near the man who fired in the air several times.

The police failed to convince the man to surrender arm and his wife talked to the police few times but the dramatic standoff continued.

Paramilitary soldiers were also called for any possible action. The drama had blocked traffic on the main road leading to the parliament house.

The situation began after the man opened fire with automatic weapons on Jinnah Avenue.

The man was demanding safe passage however the police did not allow him and he had to stay inside the car. He had rented the car, which bears fake number plate.
