The National Assembly on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution, condemning the recent firing by Indian forces and killing an army captain.

Pakistan army says that the army officer was killed and another soldier injured when Indian forces fired at its posts late Tuesday and Wednesday morning along the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region.

The incident was the latest in the on-going escalations along the LoC, which has heightened diplomatic tensions between the South Asian nuclear rivals.

The National Assembly, Lower House of the parliament, Thursday passed a unanimous resolution condemning the unprovoked Indian army shelling on the Line of Control.

The resolution moved by Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanvir Hussain expressed serious concerns over the continued violations of the ceasefire on the LoC by the Indian army and demanded for constructive and result-oriented peace process.

The House paid rich tributes to slain Captain Sarfraz and prayed for early recovery of the injured soldier.

The resolution said, “the people of the country stand by the civil and military leadership to defend the territories of the country.”

Pakistan and India had declared a ceasefire in 2003 however troops of both countries now routinely fire at each other that has caused tensions.  They accuse each other of violating the ceasefire.

Pakistan on Wednesday summoned a senior Indian diplomat to the Foreign Ministry and a protest was lodged over the killing of an army captain in firing by Indian troops.

“The Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad was called in to the Foreign Office and a strong protest was lodged over the unprovoked firing by Indian army soldiers last night in the Shaqma sector, Kargil, which resulted in the martyrdom of a Pakistan Army captain and injury to another soldier,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Tension has heightened at a time when prime ministers of the two countries are scheduled to meet next month in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
