Prime Minister heads to New York to represent Pakistan at UN

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif left for New York on Sunday to represent his country’s delegation at the UN General Assembly session, officials said.

The Foreign Ministry says the Prime Minister will address the UN General Assembly on September 27 and will highlight Pakistan’s point of view on various regional and international issues besides domestic priorities.

Nawaz Sharif is visiting the United Nations for the first time since he has taken the office in June.

During his week-long stay in the New York‚ the Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly session, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, says.

Aizaz Chaudhry said that Prime Minister will also attend various events during his stay in New York including high level meetings on nuclear disarmament, millennium development goals and sustainable development.

 

He said that Pakistan and India are engaged to arrange a meeting of the Prime Ministers of the two countries in New York. “Both the leaders are expected to consider ways to resume dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve all outstanding issues.”

 

“Pakistan’s position has been that it could provide a useful opportunity for the two leaders to engage in a constructive dialogue to discuss ways of building mutual trust and improving bilateral relations,” the spokesman said ahead on the Prime Minister’s visit.

 

Speaking at a military airbase near Islamabad on his departure for New York, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that he will discuss promotion of economic and trade ties during his meetings with the world leaders on the sideline of the General Assembly session in New York.

 

“I am leaving for the UN General Assembly as a leader of a responsible and democratic state,” Nawaz Sharif, who was elected the Prime Minister for third time following the May 11 elections.

 

He said Pakistan is a peace loving country and wants to have good relations with all the neighboring countries including India for maintenance of peace in the region.

 

Officials say the Prime Minister in his address to the General Assembly will also apprise the session of the efforts of the present government to curb the menace of terrorism besides its endeavor to bring stability to the region.

 

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi are also accompanying Nawaz Sharif.
