Death toll from Peshawar Church terror attack reaches 81

Death toll from the two suicide attacks on a Church in Peshawar reached 81 as more injured died of wounds in hospital, doctors said Monday.

Seventy-eight people were killed and one hundred and six injured in two suicide blasts at the Church at Kohati Gate area on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Zaheerul Islam has confirmed that two suicide bombers entered into the church and blew themselves.

An investigation committee also started its work and visited the site on Monday to collect evidence.

All slain persons were buried late Sunday and over 100 injured are being treated in Lady Reading Hospital.

AIG Bomb Disposal Squad Shafqat Malik said at least 16 kilogram explosives were used in these blasts.

Angry Christians continued protest across Pakistan on Monday and condemned the attacks.

In Islamabad protestors blocked the main highway linking the capital with Rawalpindi. Hundreds of vehicles were stuck up on the Islamabad Express Highway and the people could not reach offices on time.

Police arrived at the scene to convince the organizers to disperse and open the road. However the demonstrators had refused.

Eye-witnesses account of the terror attack suggests the blasts occurred when the people were coming out of the Church after Sunday service and there were around five to six hundred people inside the Church at the time of explosions.

Eye-witnesses said that the bombers were guised in police uniforms.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced two hundred thousand rupees as compensation for the heirs of each blasts victim.

The Cabinet Division has also been directed to immediately make helicopters available to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government for any evacuation of injured for specialized treatment in Islamabad or any other cities.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has sought report about the incident from Inspector General Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Prime Minister called Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan immediately after his arrival at Heathrow airport‚ London and directed the Interior Minister to keep him abreast regarding the situation on regular basis.

The Prime Minister also directed the Minister to devise a new security plan to protect the worship places of all minorities including churches.

The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment of providing all possible support and assistance by the Federal Government to the Provincial government including medical and logistical arrangements for the injured.
