Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has arrived in New York to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the UN General Assembly’s annual session beginning Tuesday, Pakistani officials said.

He will address the session on Friday and highlight Pakistan’s foreign policy guidelines and its view point on various regional and international issues.

He will inform the UN General Assembly about Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with the world leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly session.

A meeting with Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, is also expected at breakfast, officials say.

Nawaz Sharif will also attend various events including high level meetings on millennium development goals‚ sustainable development and nuclear disarmament.

Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs‚ Sartaj Aziz says that Pakistan will raise the issue of US drone strikes on its soil at various UN forums.

In an interview‚ he said Pakistan has already made it clear that drone strikes are counter-productive as they lead to civilian casualties that generate hatred among the people.

Sartaj said drone strikes also infringe Pakistan’s sovereignty and violate international law.

He said international opinion is now also turning in favour of Pakistan’s stand on the issue.

He hoped that the United States would feel the international pressure and end the drone attacks.

To a question‚ Sartaj Aziz said Islamabad has initiated several moves to promote good relations with its neighbours.
