Needing nine runs off only four balls in the Asia Cup match against India, Pakistan’s all-rounder Shahid Afridi struck two sixes off Ravichandran Ashwin to claim the match for his side at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium yesterday, March 2, 2014.
Batting first, India set a target of 245 runs for Pakistan to chase, which seemed like an easy ask as the Green Shirts ramped up 200 runs at the loss of only 4 wickets. However, the next 36 runs cost them 5 quick wickets, leaving them reeling on 236-9. It was then that Afridi’s flamboyant batting came to the rescue as he hit two consecutive sixes to wrap up the proceedings.
This was Pakistan’s second victory in three matches, but did not bode so well for India, who will might not be making the final even if they defeat Afghanistan in their next match.
While Afridi stole the show with his 18-ball 34-run knock, it was Mohammad Hafeez whose patient 75 set the base for Pakistan’s victory. However, given how Afridi ended the match, celebrations in Pakistan took off with a bang, and renowned property Tycoon Malik Riaz, owner of the Bahria Town property projects, announced a 1-kanal plot for Afridi in his new development, Bahria Town Karachi.
Pakistan’s next match is scheduled against Bangladesh, on March 6, just before the final is due to take place on the 8th at Dhaka.
