Amidst the chaos in Ukraine, the country made an international appeal for help against a possible move by Russian forces to invade the country on Sunday.
Russian forces last week took over the Crimean peninsula, and it was feared that they might move towards the falling Ukraine. Deeply concerned over Russia’s military actions, US Secretary of State John Kerry called upon President Vladimir Putin to warn him against ‘an incredible act of aggression’.
According to reports from Washington, Russia is believed to have control of Crimea, with more than 6,000 troops on the ground. Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, appealed for help saying, “We believe that our western partners and the entire global community will support the territorial integrity and unity of Ukraine.”
In response, NATO held several meetings whiles Britain’s foreign minister visited Kiev to show support. The US, France and Britain have also reportedly discussed boycotting the coming Group of Eight economic summit, which was to be hosted by Russia.
People took to the streets in parts of several Russian cities, including Kiev and Moscow, where some protested against the Russian occupation of Crimea while others rejoiced it.
The US Secretary of State, in an interview on Sunday, talked about boycotts, visa bans, financial penalties and asset freezing against Russia’s military action.
