Two Indian Teen Sisters Hanged after Gang Rape

Villagers in an Indian rural area found two teen sisters hung from a mango tree early in the morning on Wednesday May 28, 2014. The two sisters from low-caste Dalit community, aged 14 and 15, in Katra village in Indian state of Utter Pradesh were gang raped and killed by a group of men. Police has arrested at least three alleged rapists including two police officers involved in the crime.

The local police officer claimed that the girls most likely committed suicide and hanged themselves after the sexual assault. Some reports suggest that they were only 12 and 14 years old though police did not confirm their ages.

The two girls were gone out as there was no toilet in their house. The villagers found their dead bodies later in the morning hanging with ropes tied to a mango tree.

The villagers did not let the police take down the dead bodies as a protest and gathered under the tree demanding arrest of the gang rapists and murderers.

Data suggest that more than half-a-billion Indians lack access to toilets. Due to lack of access to safe toilet, approximately 30 percent women from poor families have been sexually assaulted every year.

The head of Uttar Pradesh state’s ruling party, Samajwadi Party, told an election rally that the party was opposed to the law to execute the gang rapists.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was quoted saying, “Boys will be boys, they make mistakes.”

India has death penalty for the criminals involved in the gang rape regardless the victim is survived.

Reports suggest that a woman is raped every 22 minutes in India. The number is most likely much higher as many women decide not to report the crime for cultural or family reasons.
