Najm Abdullah al Sudani, Iraqi army general died Monday in clashes with militants during a powerful offensive launched several weeks ago in Karma, a town of over 100,000 people just 64 miles west of Baghdad, the prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki said in a statement.

According to Saad Maan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, the city is under control of Sunni militias of the Islamic State (IS), formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

General Al Sudani was commander of the sixth division responsible for part of the capital Army. “[ The general ] found martyrdom on the battlefield while fighting the terrorists,” the statement said, without offering details.

At least four people were killed Monday and another ten are injured in an attack by a suicide car bomb in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad, an Iraqi security source told Efe . The alleged terrorist crashed the vehicle into a checkpoint located at the west entrance of Al Kazemiya area, north of the capital. In this zone lies the tomb and shrine of Imam Musa al Kazem, one of the twelve Imams revered by the Shi’a sect of Islam.

Iraq’s parliament has postponed until August 12 meeting called for Tuesday in order to appoint the prime minister. The meeting has been delayed due to “lack of agreement”, according to a spokesman. Other sources, however, indicated to the agency France Presse that ” the date is yet to be specified.”
