Two candidates proclaim election victory in Indonesia

Indonesia voted Wednesday to decide who will be the next president. The two contenders for the tightest presidential race in the country since the fall of dictator Suharto have claimed victory after learning a projection of results. The former general Prabowo Subianto winner of the elections after rival candidate Joko Widodo, Jokowi, do the same. However, official results will not be announced until the 21st of this month.

Unofficial counts that have been used are that candidates have obtained Widodo 53% of the vote compared to 47 % of Prabowo Subianto, according to AFP. Another survey by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said that Jokowi have obtained 52%, versus 48% of Prabowo, according to the BBC.

These results have led to the candidate of the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle (PDI- P) to be crowned winner. “We would like to greatly thank all the people of Indonesia, as well as party members who worked hard,” he pointed Jokowi Prabowo, meanwhile, said it has received “the support and mandate of the people of Indonesia ” and said the data that the other candidates are presenting is wrong, according to local media.

About 186 million Indonesians were called to vote. The vote in the archipelago with the largest number of Muslims in the world, but with significant Christian, Hindu and Buddhist minorities, has passed without major incidents, according to local media.

Jokowi is the first presidential candidate with no ties to the authoritarian past, and he is committed implicitly set a new style of leadership and consolidate democracy.
