IHC suspends FIRs

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the suspension of an FIR registered against the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Namaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Interior, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique along with police officials, including three Inspector Generals of Police.

Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui gave the order for the registration of the FIR in regards to the violence and clashes that took place between protestors and police on Constitution Avenue on August 30, 2014.

Notices have also been issued to both the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s leaders. The ADSJ Shahrukh Arjumand ordered registration of the FIR against the police officials in the Secretariat Police Station Islamabad, and it was challenged by Inspector Generals of Police Islamabad, Punjab and Pakistan Railways.

The Additional Attorney General, during Thursday’s hearing in the Islamabd High Court, stated that the ADSJ’s order did not include the examination of facts and issues and that the law enforcement agencies were performing their duties.

The ADSJ had acted on the application submitted by PTI’s high-ranking party members, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Jahangir Khan Tareen and Arif Alvi. The clashes which took place between party workers, civilians and the police resulted in three reported deaths and several people were injured.

Further proceedings in the matter have been adjourned till another date.
