As the two allies enter a new phase of cooperation, a delegation from Pakistan took off for the United States for the 23rd meeting of the US-Pakistan Defence Consultative Group expected to be held today.

The Pakistani delegation is headed by retired Lt Gen Alam Khattak and talks will be focused maintaining peace and stability in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region, especially after the US drawdown after 2014.

According to a senior diplomat, the relations between Pakistan and US are improving considerably and both countries have more common ground now than differences.

“Tensions of the recent past are being removed and a new consensus is emerging. Now there are more convergences than differences.”

“There is a realisation that the campaign must target terrorists on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border,” the diplomat further added. “Failure on one side will have repercussions on the other side too.”

The defence establishments meeting each other is expected to yield better coordination and policy decisions to ensure stability and security in the region alongside protection of national interests.

So far both countries realize that their partnership and cooperation is vital to both regional and international stability and security, and while the US has been supporting Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism, the Pakistan military has also carried out major attacks against terrorist havens, resulting in confirmed high profile terrorists being killed.
